Post-operative infections remain a major concern in surgical care, contributing to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and heightened patient morbidity. Effective infection control practices, including hand hygiene, proper wound care, and sterilization protocols, are crucial in preventing healthcare-associated infections (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a central role in implementing and enforcing these practices to safeguard post-operative patients (Adeyemi & Okeke, 2023).
Bauchi State Specialist Hospital is one of the leading healthcare institutions in northern Nigeria, providing surgical services to a large population. Despite established infection control guidelines, reports suggest that post-operative infections continue to be a challenge (Ibrahim & Lawal, 2024). Factors such as limited resources, inadequate training, and non-compliance with standard procedures may contribute to this issue.
This study aims to evaluate infection control practices among post-operative patients in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, examining adherence levels, effectiveness, and areas needing improvement.
Post-operative infections pose a significant threat to patient safety, leading to complications such as delayed wound healing, sepsis, and even mortality. Despite existing infection prevention protocols, adherence to best practices remains inconsistent in many healthcare settings, including Bauchi State Specialist Hospital (Ojo et al., 2025).
Inadequate infection control practices among healthcare workers, particularly nurses, can result in cross-contamination and increased infection rates. Therefore, assessing the effectiveness of current infection control measures is essential to improving patient safety and surgical outcomes in the hospital.
This study focuses on post-operative patients in Bauchi State Specialist Hospital, assessing infection control practices among nurses. Limitations include potential underreporting of infections and variability in individual nurse compliance.
